Fashionista: I love Betsey Johnson

"Fashion is art; art takes risk, and classic is just boring."

Thats a quote from the essay I had to turn in with my LA Fashion Week emerging designers submission. I find out on the 4th which three designers they picked to go on to Fashion Week and quickly realized that my line could either work against me for being so different, or work in my favor for that very reason. Fashion Week reject or not, I'll always stick behind my art.

Anyways, this week's fashionista picks are going to be all Betsey Johnson in honor of her belated Birthday! Last Sunday I dropped by her Birthday party on Melrose and had so much fun. Finally got to meet one of the most influential designers on my own designs, and she was so amazing! Love love love her to pieces! Its always great when someone says some of my clothing designs remind them of hers- she was the dark horse in the fashion world during the pop art time, and I feel like Im the underdog in the emerging fashion world during this time. Fashion is art; and those of us that design differently are not just designers but artists!

Below are a few outfits I put together all B.J....check them out and tell me which is your favorite and what you would wear it to!

Fashionista: RECES$IONISTA

"It's a common misconception that you have to spend a ton of money to look good- that's false."

Whether you are feeling the wrath of the economy or not, we all love to get a good bargain on cute clothes! To have great style, and a style that is your own, you don't need to be draped in designer duds and own twenty pairs of loubuttoins (although that would be nice!) All you need is something anyone can have:  c o n f i d e n c e.

As a designer, I frown upon stores like Forever21 because they copy fellow high end designers' designs, remanufacture them overseas, and sell them for super cheap. But as a consumer, even I can't resist a really cute top for $12.80. My closet ranges from designer clothing to no name clothing purchased at thrift stores and stores like Ross or TJ Maxx. I feel like I could wear a potato sack sometimes, make it my own, and still look great because I have confidence in my style & wardrobe.

The outfit below (minus the shoes and handbag) was all under $20. Heartshaped lolita glasses, no-brand black tank top, elastic belt from Forever21, and a four dollar houndstooth print skirt from the thrift store that I also wear as a dress.

This week I'm going to be a babe on a budget. I'm going to do some online shopping and score five amazing outfits—head to toe looks—all for under $100 each.

Enjoy...

Outfit #1:

Silver sequin flowy top $55 @ topshop.com

I love this top. Super cute with denim or high waist shorts if you don't want to show your midriff!

Pair with...

Bleached skinny ripped jeans $27.80 @ forever21.com

Pair with...

Miss Me platform pump in white $15 @ 15dollarstore.com

TOTAL: $97.80

Outfit #2:

Colorblock ruffle dress $11.99 @ wetseal.com

Pair with...

Red elastic faux leather belt $21.99 @ amiclubwear.com

Pair with...

Cupcake love vinyl clutch $15 @ inhope.etsy.com

Pair with...

Betsey Johnson heart heels size 7.5 $49.99 @ ebay.com

WOW I wish these were in my size because I would totally get them. Cutest shoes in the world!

Total: $98.98

Outfit #3:

Empire tie strap dress by twelve by twelve $34 @ forever21.com

Pair with...

Black rampage sequin flats $21 @ rampage.com (I have these in hot pink!)

Pair with...

Satin ribbon bow headband $2.80 @ forever21.com

Pair with..

Sequin cuff $3 @ charlotterusse.com

TOTAL: $60.80

Outfit #4:

MUST-HAVE! h.i.p. applique back top $18.90 @ nordstroms.com

Applique back tops are amazing and really in right now! This one from nordstroms is gorgeous and inexpensive!

Pair with...

BF bermuda short $22.50 @ wetseal.com

...because sometimes short-shorts are just trashy.

Pair with...

Gathered sleeve stretch blazer $15 @ 15dollarstore.com

A tailored jacket looks great over a long top and gives you an edgy-sophistcate look when paired with distressed denim. It's a shame to cover up that gorgeous flower back top, but sometimes it just gets cold! Love this basic blazer & I think I might just have to order it. Anything ruched (gathered) is very figure complimenting.

Pair with...

Studded rocker platform $29.80 @ forever21.com

TOTAL: $86.20

Outfit #5:

Peace sign tank $6.98 @ hottopic.com

Pair with...

Studyhall sweater $29 @ lulus.com

SO NERDY & SO CUTE! I love pairing things that don't really match together- who would have thought a striped cardigan and neon purple peace sign shirt would be cute together?

Pair with...

Ruffle skirt $14.80 @ forever21.com

I have a black ruffle skirt like this that i have had since I was 14 and I still wear it! So versatile & can be mixed and matched with so many things.

Pair with...

Slouchy knee high flat boot $18 @ makemechic.com

Don't afraid to pair black with brown! I love flat slouchy boots they look good with anything, and I can't wait to get a ton of new colors for fall!

TOTAL: $68.78

Accessory of the week:

I know these are over $100 but I can't get over them! Shut up, Jeffery Campbell, these are so frreeaaking amazing...

UNICORN HEELS! They come in other colors but my vote is on the black ones...$121 @ lulus.com

Random item of the week:

MEOW! A crocheted kitty-cat bonnet. Would you wear this? $20 @ msfitts13.etsy.com

Which outfit is your favorite? I love every single on of them & would get them all!

What stores do you like to shop at?

XOXO,

MARIALIA

Fashionista: Cutie Overload!!!

“Ask yourself, are you sure this world is for you? And are you sure you are the right person to survive this world - the fashion world, a world with no rules, no laws?”

I could go on for days about how f*cked up this industry is half the time, and all the bullsh*t that has to be put up with. It's incredibly cutthroat, difficult, overwhelming, exhausting, and will eat you alive all at the same time. But the key to survival is unconditional love. And in the midst of all the stress and chaos, there is nothing more uplifting to me than "cute". It alleviates so much stress and tension and lately, more than ever, I have been paying more attention to adorable cuteness that is mixed into fashion. It totally lifts your spirits! Cute-ness Therapy? Count me in.

Bunny slippers, animal shirts, and other ridiculously cute things aren't just for kids anymore...

Fashionista: Inspiration is everywhere

I think fashion is about suspense and surprise and fantasy. It’s not about rules.

Often times when I go out—to events, or even to my own fashion shows, I get a lot of stares... but it's most definitley not in a good way! Last week I was trying to walk down Santa Monica Blvd in a mermaid style skirt that limits my strides to the most minimal steps, fake flowers all over me, and five inch heels. It wasn't very fun trying to cross the street. But then about fifty models dressed in crazy circus attire and insane hair styles leave the salon and start walking to the venue as well and I suddenly feel more at home, haha. In times like these, I usually just keep my head down and act like there's nobody around. Most of the time, I'll even forget I'm wearing something ridiculous and wonder why the person across the street is staring. People yelling out their car; honking; taking photos—it was a circus, literally. But thats what I love about it! We have the power to wear something so ridiculous and out of the ordinary that anyone who walks by you is bound to remember that outfit the next day. We are modern day artists; wearing our masterpieces rather than framing them to hang in a gallery.

Creativity within fashion, taste, and personal style is all rooted from inspiration. With the right mind and vision, fashion is something that can be so artistic to the point where it becomes ridiculous. That's my favorite.

This week I will show you the most irrelevant, crazy things from everyday life and how to result it's inspiration into a wicked outfit. Think outside the box :)
